From joy to misery

From the joy we felt in June 2016

to the misery that we feel today, here are my thoughts:

That human nature is deeply deeply flawed;

But here in Britain we produced the best that humans are capable of;

The best justice, freedom, invention and creativity;

The best democracy and the best ideals.

That all this was set in train by Alfred the Great.

That our forebears sweated blood to nurture and protect it.

And that now we witness its ending. And it ends under our watch.

However much we may wish to blame the EU or Theresa May or various perfidious groups ‑ we are they who have allowed it to end.

And therefore we richly deserve the misery that now we feel.
