Values or a value-system?
What’s in a word?
Probably we are all tired of hearing about “values” and “value statements”, which usually entails a pick’n’mix selection of words that sound good – but in practice mean nothing.
And what happens when one ‘value’ contradicts another one?
But if we have no values then how do we make sense of life, and how do we ourselves live a life with meaning and purpose? How do we make decisions? How do we avoid falling under the influence of other people who do have values – values which we might not even agree with -?
How do we know what we think about any subject unless we have a preconceived set of values to line it up against?
That’s why we talk about a value-system – meaning a set of values that interrelate and reinforce one another.
